Call for Papers
The call for papers for the 56th Annual Conference of the British Association for Applied Linguistics, Wednesday 23rd August – Friday 25th August 2023, The University of York is now open.
This year’s conference theme is “Opening up Applied Linguistics”. With this in mind, we aim to celebrate existing open research initiatives, which have led the way in transforming applied linguistics research by making it more accessible, transparent, reproducible and collaborative, to further realise principles of openness and inclusivity by representing a broader range of areas within applied linguistics, including but not limited to decolonizing language learning and teaching, language use in the digital age, and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and to create an accessible and inclusive conference environment.
Please complete this form by Friday 17th March 2023 if you would like to contribute to a symposium (see here for list of accepted symposia) or make an individual presentation.
Note: Authors may submit no more than two papers as lead author.
What is a symposium? And, why contribute to one?
A symposium is a 2.5 hour slot featuring a number of presentations. The first hour of all symposia will comprise two 30 minute presentation slots (20 minute presentation, 5 minutes for discussion, and 5 minutes to change over). In the last 1.5 hour, symposia organisers may include further short or long presentations, a panel discussion, or poster showcases, or a mixture of these. Symposia therefore allow for extended, interactive discussion on a specific topic. Symposia attract attendees as well as contributors with similar interests. Discussion therefore also tends to be more focused and in-depth. Please check the list of accepted symposia for themes and details of the formats they are accepting.
Note: Papers which are not accepted for inclusion in a symposium will automatically be considered for inclusion in the programme as either an individual presentation or a poster.
What format can my presentation take?
Individual presentations may take the form of a 20 minute presentation or a poster. Please indicate your preferred format when submitting your abstract.
Note: If it is not possible to include your individual presentation in the programme, it will automatically be considered for inclusion as a poster.
What is the application and review process?
All proposals will be assessed with respect to the following criteria:
- Relevance to BAAL interests
- Significance
- Methodology
- Analysis
- Presentation
Fit to the conference theme / symposium *
*Contributors might engage with the theme of the conference/symposium in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: highlighting any links with the theme of the symposium (if relevant), highlighting how their research addresses an under-researched area of applied linguistics, highlighting any novel methods of data collection or analysis employed in their research, and showcasing how they are engaging in open science practices.
